Why Every Kitchen Needs a Wooden Spoon
From the Kitchen
If you've spent any amount of time in my kitchen, you've probably noticed I have a thing for wooden spoons.
Not the fancy ones.
Not the engraved ones.
And definitely not the ones that are too pretty to actually cook with.
I'm talking about the wooden spoon.
The one that's slightly darker near the handle because it's stirred a hundred pots of soup.
The one with tiny scratches from scraping the bottom of cast iron.
The one that somehow always feels better in your hand than every other spoon in the drawer.
If you've got one...
You know exactly which spoon I'm talking about.
Now, could I use silicone?
Absolutely.
Could I use stainless steel?
Of course.
But here's the thing...
A wooden spoon changes with you.
It slowly takes on the life of your kitchen.
It remembers the blackberry jam that bubbled over.
The chili that simmered all afternoon.
The cookie dough that mysteriously kept disappearing before it made it to the oven.
(I refuse to investigate where those spoonfuls went.)
Every tiny mark tells a story.
And honestly...
I think people are a little bit like that, too.
💭Crystal's Side Quest
Every family has at least one recipe card that says:
"Bake until done."
Thank you, Grandma. That's incredibly helpful.
The older I get, the more I realize life leaves its marks on all of us.
Some days leave scratches.
Some seasons leave stains.
Some memories soften us.
Others shape us into someone a little wiser than we were before.
For the longest time, I thought those marks meant something was worn out.
Now I think they mean something has been well loved.
Maybe that's why I always reach for the oldest spoon first.
It reminds me that beautiful things don't have to stay perfect.
They're allowed to become useful.
Comfortable.
Familiar.
The best kitchens I've ever been in weren't spotless.
They smelled like cinnamon.
Or soup.
Or fresh bread.
The counters had a little flour on them.
Someone was always stirring something.
Someone was always laughing.
And somewhere...
Usually sitting in a crock beside the stove...
There was a wooden spoon waiting for its next recipe.
I think every home deserves one.
Not because it stirs better.
Because it reminds us that the best meals are made with hands that aren't afraid to leave fingerprints behind.
🍵 From My Cup
It just feels right while talking about favorite kitchen tools, old cookbooks, and the kind of meals that bring everyone wandering into the kitchen asking,
"Whatcha making?"
✨ A Little Magic for Today
The next time you're cooking, pause for just a second before you start stirring.
Look at the spoon in your hand.
If it's old...
Smile.
Think about everything it's helped create.
If it's new...
Here's hoping it has a long life full of soup, cookies, family dinners, and stories worth telling.
