The Art of Taking Five Minutes
Around the Hearth
I have a confession.
I'm really bad at relaxing.
Like... impressively bad.
You know those people who can sit on the couch and "just be?"
I genuinely don't understand them.
If I'm sitting still, my brain is usually making a list.
Did I switch the laundry?
Do we have butter?
I should really water that plant.
Wait... did I answer that email?
I wonder what tea would pair with blackberry cobbler...
Actually...
That last one's important.
😂
Somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that if I wasn't being productive, I was somehow falling behind.
Maybe you've done that too.
It's funny how we can spend an entire day taking care of everyone else and somehow convince ourselves that five minutes for ourselves is asking too much.
The thing is...
Five minutes isn't lazy.
Five minutes isn't selfish.
Five minutes is maintenance.
We change the oil in our cars.
We charge our phones every night.
But somehow we expect ourselves to keep running on empty.
That doesn't make much sense when you really think about it.
I've learned that I don't need an entire spa day to reset.
Sometimes I just need to put the kettle on.
Because here's the beautiful thing about making tea...
You can't really rush it.
You can certainly try.
(Again... ask me how I know.)
But boiling water takes as long as boiling water takes.
Tea steeps in its own time.
Those few minutes become a tiny pause built right into your day.
And maybe that's the lesson.
Not everything needs to happen faster.
Maybe some of the best things happen because they don't.
💭 Crystal's Side Quest
I started writing this article about tea and somehow ended up reorganizing my spice cabinet. I regret nothing.
Now...
Let's be honest.
Sometimes my "five peaceful minutes" include standing in the kitchen wondering why I walked in there in the first place.
Sometimes I'm reheating the same cup because I got distracted reorganizing the spice cabinet.
Sometimes I finally sit down only to realize the dog needs out.
Life isn't neat.
It isn't perfectly aesthetic.
And honestly?
I wouldn't trust advice from someone who pretends it is.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is simply creating one small moment that belongs entirely to you.
Five minutes.
One mug.
One deep breath.
That's enough.
Tomorrow will still be there.
The dishes will still be there.
The emails will absolutely still be there.
But for just a little while...
You get to be here.
And I think that's a kind of everyday magic worth protecting.
🍵 From My Cup
Lately I've been reaching for Calm in the Bones when life feels especially loud.
Not because it magically fixes everything.
But because it reminds me that slowing down is allowed.
✨ A Little Magic for Today
Before your next cup of tea—or cocoa—leave your phone in another room.
Just while the water boils.
No scrolling.
No multitasking.
Just five uninterrupted minutes.
You might be surprised how long five minutes actually feels.
